Nuclear Tech: New Horizons

The modpack that the HBM Nuclear Tech mod always deserved.

NT:NH is a big progressive questing modpack for Minecraft 1.7.10, balanced around the NTM. The idea is simple - take HBM Nuclear Tech (one of the deepest, most underrated mods in modded Minecraft) and give it the GTNH treatment. Structured progression, real depth, and a questbook that actually teaches you the mod instead of assuming you already know it.

What is this?

This isn't a "throw nukes at everything" pack (well, just a teeny-tiny bit). Honestly, the nuclear theme is almost secondary. NTM is a full industrial sim. Multi-level factory gameplay, complex processing chains (hello GT), a hidden lore system, and a decade of active development by one person - HBMTheBobcat - that most players have never touched. NT:NH is meant to change that.

Over 300 quests take you from primitive survival to alloy smelting, multiblock machines, oil processing, fission and fusion reactors, and beyond. The progression right now runs through LV1 (early game), LV2 (oil age), LV3 (reactors), LV3.5 (space), and LV4 (endgame). And it's always growing. New content gets added constantly, and there are big reworks planned for both ends of the game. The early game is getting something like a TerraFirmaCraft treatment Soon™, to make the stone-to-first-press transition smoother and more interesting without turning it into a grind.

Oh, and it works solo or with friends! That's not a marketing line, it literally started as a modpack made for friends to play together, and multiplayer support has been baked in ever since. Read more about the project history here - click

There's room for exploring too. Dungeons, boss fights, hidden stuff. Did you know NTM has lore? You better check it out. The questbook explains every machine, every process, every material, but it doesn't spoil the secrets. You find those yourself.

More than just a modpack

So here's the thing. The lead dev (that's me, Bufka2011) is 15. I started this whole thing because I wanted a cool pack to play with my friends. And then it kind of… got out of hand? In a good way.

Now there's a whole ecosystem around it. An official website, an OST, a radio station, a (dumbass) Discord bot, and two official Minecraft servers running the pack: Balefire (an SMP) and Digamma (anarchy). One for people who want to build and survive together, one for people who want to watch the world burn. Both are equally fun.

I didn't plan for all this to exist, it just kept growing. And honestly, I'm still figuring out how I keep up with it all. But it's been a blast.

Key Features

  • ⚙️ Machines That Build Machines - It starts simple: a press, a blast furnace, some steel. Next thing you know you're running gas centrifuges, piping chemicals through processing plants, automating assembly lines. Recipes get complex and chains get long, but that's where the good stuff lives. You have to plan ahead or you fall behind.

  • ⚡ Power With Consequences - Coal and diesel get you going. Steam turbines pick up the pace. Then comes the nuclear age: Chicago Pile, ZIRNOX, the towering RBMK. Later, fusion and dark matter wait for the truly committed. Every step wants more infrastructure, more planning, and a healthy respect for what happens when things go wrong.

  • 🧪 Chemistry You Can't Skip - Oil refining, uranium enrichment, petrochemical processing. These are main-road work, not side quests. Some materials, like Schrabidium, have no natural source. You'll breed them, transmute them, or otherwise convince the universe to make them exist.

  • ☢️ Hazards That Respect You - Radiation scales from nuisance to lethal. It spreads through chunks, kills plants, lingers where you don't want it. Flammable gases, lung disease from hazardous materials, and the ever-present chance of a meltdown mean your safety systems are not decorative. Cover your RBMK columns. You'll thank yourself later.

  • 💀 True Difficulty - New hunger system, smarter mob AI, new mobs, tough boss battles. Mistakes cost you. Victories are earned.

  • 🚀 Weapons and Rockets, Survival-Ready - The bombs are real bombs now: Gadget, Fat Man, thermonuclear devices, Schrabidium warheads. Craft the explosives, build the missiles, set up turrets and defenses. Everything from warhead to launch button is made by hand in survival.

  • 🌌 Space Is Part of the Endgame - Multi-stage rockets, orbital stations, planets with their own atmospheres and bedrock ores. Each destination has its own challenges and rewards. Pack a spacesuit, check your drive processors, and try not to breathe the vacuum.

  • 🌍 Over 20 languages - localized by the community via Crowdin. That part's just cool.

  • 🖥️ Optimized Performance - Look, NTNH is not a lightweight pack. It lags sometimes. But considering how much content is packed in here, the fact that it runs at all is kind of beautiful. Angelica, ArchaicFix, and a pile of other optimization mods do a lot of heavy lifting, so it stays playable even on low-end hardware.

  • 📅 Active Development - We aim for monthly releases. Sometimes that slips, especially when HBM's NTM itself has an update cooking and we'd rather wait, pull the changes, and ship something stable. Other times we don't wait, because we've got our own stuff to add. Either way, you get a changelog. Community bug reports and an open GitHub organization make sure of that.

Who is it for?

New to HBM's Nuclear Tech mod? The quest book teaches you from scratch. No prior NTM knowledge needed.

Already an NTM player? You get modified mechanics from the original NTM and integration with other mods. The devs are doing some BIG STUFF reworking the vanilla NTM experience.

If you've played GTNH and wondered what an NTM-based modpack in the same spirit would look like, here it is.

Free. Always.

NT:NH is built on free, open-source mods. Free to play, no paywalls or pay-to-win. You can support through Ko-fi, but it is never mandatory.
