Oh Jesus thanks Technic for removing all my formatting. Somebody recently posted a Reddit thread so I just threw it there in a way that doesn't destroy eyes: https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/zkh0bz/a_modpack_which_needs_more_attention_babys_first/j1kqdkh/

Happy Christmas Eve! I am checking in because my wife likes to bring up the pack from time to time to impress kids or something. So she found a Reddit post from around two weeks ago about the pack, and I decided to pinch my nose and see what's happened in the comments section here since the millenium where I used to pay attention. In general, I won't be making any more updates to this version of the pack. I've lost all my tribal knowledge about it and any issues I found will probably get scoffed for using such an ancient Minecraft and Forge version. I do continue to play modded Minecraft, but a B2SR or something wouldn't happen unless I could really spread out the load, and that comes with bringing in people and drama. I'm honestly surprised how much people actually play the pack with their kids. I still remember when somebody was joking with me about how their kids panicked in The Nether over all the exploding ores, and I ran to the computer, dumped the quests into JSON, and scoured it for any curse words I accidentally used. I was also surprised when YouTube videos started to show up online for it. For some time, I'd just Google to get the Technic link to show to people, and I had a mental block that would ignore the video recommendations because "why the heck would that be a thing?" The irony is that I was strongly motivated to make the pack so people didn't have to watch a 30-minute video of somebody showing off their base and then flubbing the topic at hand randomly in the middle. But the BFSR videos were fine and fun. You all were cool. A major reason I was able to make the pack in the first place was that I had a two-month work sabbatical I got for time of service, and my plans on using that time otherwise fell through. So I was able to casually chew on that pack during most of that time and form it up. That stuff still comes up. Heck, I could take a one-month one at the start of the year if I wanted, but I have more competition for that time now. Regarding starting in the Overworld on servers: this is something that would require separate, dedicated code from what I wrote to get single-player starts to work with Baby's First Space City, and I wouldn't attempt to do it now. In particular, I would expect zero help trying to develop new 1.7.10 code with Forge and I am sure there are some technicals involved in getting that done correctly. Meanwhile, I see stuff like Stoneblock 3 that puts you in a starting portal area and think that there are examples in newer versions of Minecraft (and Forge) that could do it. In other words, it could happen with a newer modpack. I was pretty sure that last posted release was stable at the time of release and shouldn't be chewing up quest books normally, but HQM can get wild if you update the pack. In such cases it may be better to nuke the book, spawn in a creative/administrative book, and just restore your progress. I have played some more Minecraft since the BFSR days. Most recently, I dabbled with Gregtech: New Horizons up to around the point of EV/IV with an online buddy before switching over to Nomifactory solo--and completely clearing it (phew!). I'm now messing around in Skyblock 3 to see what's in newer packs. In fact, I had a few attempts at creating a B2SR first for 1.10.2 and then 1.12.2, but there were a lot of reasons it was personally overwhelming: 1. Carrying over old collateral was difficult due to enough stuff changing. 2. Adding new stuff like Botania, Immersive Engineering and perhaps Thaumcraft, and other things missing from the 1.7.10 pack or that otherwise really changed. 3. Adding on stuff that is even newer like Create. 4. Having to recreate a tutorial dimension. 5. Redoing the code to spawn in the tutorial dimension for a newer version of Forge along with getting proper server spawn into a tutorial dimension. I had something like 500 quests running around at the last point. Assuming I spend 200 words on each of them (I'm talking about quests, not tasks here), that's 100,000 words--the length of an average novel! I suppose it would have been smarter to start over, and get some friends that would collaborate. But I don't think I can lead something like that right now. I'm looking at moving across the country, teaching martial arts, and working on a game in Unity (very slowly). I think if I want to get into it again that I may post into Reddit about it or something. I am not actually active there though I have an account (rockobonaparte). You can also see me on the Something Awful forums as Rocko Bonaparte.

Any chance anyone is still looking at this? For some reason, single player works fine but every time I join the server I am hosting it crashes the client's side of the launcher. Any ideas?

I think this modpack is awesome -- very kid friendly. Playing it with my daughter. I'm not sure you can play this modpack in multiplayer, for a number of reasons: 1. The mods in the most recent server are not the same versions as the most recent modpack. I had to upgrade COFH Core and Nether Ores on the server. There might be some other inconsistencies I didn't catch. 2. For some reason the multiplayer completely bypasses the starting dimension. It dumps you into the overworld. It's not a terrible problem because you can craft a rattle with 2 dirt, and go to the city dimension that way, but how would a newcomer to the mod know that? 3. Lastly, when I play multiplayer, I can't seem to open the quest book. I get a runtime Array Out of Bounds exception thrown by the hardcore questing mod. Of the 3 problems, the last one (not being able to open the quest book) is the only game breaking problem. It's really a shame, because this is a pretty awesome modpack. I saw some posts he made on minecraftforge.net about 6 years ago when he was creating this mod, but he seems to have disappeared about 5 years ago, around 2017. He has a very distinctive handle, and I couldn't find anything posted by a Rocko Bonaparte in the last few years. He seems to have disappeared. It's a shame, because he created a really great modpack. I hope he's ok and just ... tired of Minecraft and moved on to other things.

I know this mod is very old but me and my friends wanted to play on it. For some reason the HQM book won't open and we don't know why... I am messaging hoping for the slightest chance you might see and can help me.

As an FYI, I am on-and-off working on a 1.10.2 migration. Compared to many packs, I am especially set back on this due to having to migrate my quest book, the tutorial dimension, and the support mod.
Rocko Bonaparte 6 years ago
so when is the possible date for migration?
Posted by tlal003 6 years ago
It will be a long time and might as well be a new modpack. I am waiting particularly on Galacticraft to move up to 1.12. I had pondered switching to Advanced Rocketry, but it apparently has its own problems and a completely different feel. I have to migrate both the quest book and the tutorial dimension, which is going to require a lot of hand-editing. Add on top of that all the changes to the modding landscape. To help, I have written a few scripts that help me migrate item IDs, but there isn't much I can do for the tutorial dimension's world data.

1.7.10.5 HQM Hotfix: Download this hotfix from: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6616ascw47j83ny/1.7.10.5%20hqm%20hotfix.zip?dl=1 This is an updated version of the hqm directory in BFSR. The smart thing to do as usual is the back up the BFSR instance before trying to do any of this so that it doesn't mess up your pack instance, nor your save. If you click on the modpack options gear icon in the Technic app in the BFSR instance, you can open up the directory where it was installed. From there, dump the files in the archive into config\hqm I am pondering doing a 1.7.10.6 update, but it may include mod updates that require more testing. I know there is a final CoFH version to try to deploy. After this, we have to move on to something like 1.10.2 or higher. I have not figured out what I want to do there because a lot of things have changed. I will try to aim for a direct port, but that doesn't reflect how a lot of people approach things any more.
Rocko Bonaparte 6 years ago
Ugh this site and killing newlines. Hopefully you can figure it out. :p Unfortunately, I suspect when I make a jump to a later Minecraft version that I'll end up hosting on Curse. Apparently that's where the cool kids put their packs now.

Ahh I looked up some old quest book notes. There are a few ways into the Philadelphia Experiment chapter; nether quartz, and the stone long sword. This keeps coming up so I am thinking I need to open that up differently in the future.

Hey man, me again. So, the last patch I was able to just lower my chunks to 2 until I got to the overworld, but since this new update, even that's not working. same as last time, it loads up the game, but it crashes upon making a new world or trying to join new worlds Done all the usual stuff, reinstall, changing the chunks distance, closing my eyes and hoping fml-client-latest: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/3cb3874fe854c2aa314c288b44bba4c7 One temporary solution (if it's posable, I have no idea about this stuff) might be to add an option to just spawn in the overworld. Anyway, thanks, let me know if there's anything you want me to try or you need me to send you!
I couldn't find anything obvious, but the closest thing to a band-aid that would do what you're thinking is to obliterate the Lockdown mod. That'll keep it from loading up the template save at all. It should fling you right into the Overworld. If that works, then you can try to make a rattle and go to the tutorial dimension from there. I couldn't see anything obvious from your log so all I can really imagine to do is monkey with stuff.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
You might also double-check--as it has been a few months generally--that you are still giving the pack some RAM to chew on and also ponder if you need to update the JVM. It could be you got a Java update that wasn't so useful with your own personal environment, but it's likely whatever one that was got updated again since then. As you can imagine, I am pulling things out of nowhere here.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
Wait is it a complete crash? Like it bombs out from Minecraft? I don't see any hints to that in your log. At the bottom of it, it's still chugging away. Just check that the last lines or so match up to what you have locally on your hard disk. There's usually more information when it comes to crashes.

Well I thought I'd post an update that attempts to reconcile any recent issues and take a stab at some chunk lag issue I was trying to fix in collaboration with a server owner. Technic is refusing the DropBox link for the 1.7.10.5 release I am trying to make. It complains "The Modpack Location you entered is not a valid location." The link I'm feeding downloads fine in my browser: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vegt2950mc6ys4o/babys-first-space-race-1.7.10.5.zip?dl=1
Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago
Well, it finally accepted it, although it's still not refreshing on the client yet. Here's hoping it updates okay! The one big limitation with Technic I have is not being able to do a full offline acceptance test before everybody publicly just gets to download it. I mean that I can swap files into my local instance and see that way, but there's something nice about being able to go through all the motions for one last salute before publishing a release.

Any chance on future updates? I am unable to open the game since the newest update. Just a heads up on an expected time would be great. This is my favorite modpack, just want to play it again.

I have a small log of things that should be inconsequential so I haven't updated. I was mostly waiting for Galacticraft to update to 1.10+ or else wait for it to get replaced. Then I was going to overhaul. However, nothing seems to be happening there. Even CoFH is getting a shot in the arm, and KingLemming had walked away from modding for awhile! For now, just post a log or whatever you have of the failure you're having. You shouldn't be having any problems!

Hey there :) I'm having problems with the quest "Swimming Through Spacetime" in the "A Philadelphia Experiment" chapter. It appears to be bugged somehow because it doesn't detect the magma crucible I built. Is there a way I can fix this or get around it?
JLoSan 7 years ago
Oh shoot--somebody actually posted! Sorry! It must be some metadata junk again. That has come up on-and-off with the machines. The easiest thing to do is spawn an edit book and mark the quest as completed. Run "/hqm edit" to create the edit book. I wish I saw this sooner because I want to see people get to the end of that particular quest line.

FYI--I've been having lots of system instability with my new computer, so I've been fidgeting with that. Minecraft will crash anywhere between 5 minutes to 30+ minutes into playing. This makes testing stuff a bit tricky. So I haven't been prepping any fixes. I should mention that McJty believes I can remove chunkloaders for the tutorial dimension as well as the "beach party" dimension since I can edit their power consumption to be 0. That means I don't need to power them, which means I don't have to sneak a creative energy cube next to a dimension builder, and keep it powered. This should eliminate the chunk loaders that are present at initial world generation. I think this should reduce the number of chunkloader reports.

I am asking about ChickenChunks here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/1279956-chickenbones-mods?comment=24117
Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago
I am going to add that any of you that know about this chickenchunks thing so far that instead of outright deleting the folder, please move it out of the pack instead and keep it. Preferably, you could zip it up into a Dropbox or something. I don't expect to beat on it too much for a few days because my Nerd Time will be dedicated to building new PCs in the household the next few days. However, you can see a little bit of collaboration in the Chickenbones thread I posted.

Hey, This mod Keeps crashing upon starting a world. The game loads up fine, when I try to create a world, it stops working. this modpack previously worked, but it has been a long time since I attempted to play it, so I'm not sure when it stopped working. I have also attempted a full reinstall, but that did not work. What do you recommend that I do? If it helps here's the FML-client-latest.log: https://paste.ee/p/vxBRj And the crash report: https://paste.ee/p/gHI9i
Smells like CodeChickenChunks (again). It looks like this time it's some issue with the template. You might as well open the mod pack folder, go into bfsrworld, and delete the chickenchunks folder. It should have no negative consequence. I would like to know if that worked. It appears that everybody I'm getting from people has to do with ChickenChunks. I'm unimpressed and will look into a way to manage it if I can't replace it with something else.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
Update: after following your advice the game will now load up a world, but crashes randomly after a few mins. I am able to re-open the world, but it repeats the issue.it seems to last longer if I lower the chunk limit. I also had a skim of the logs, I don't understand most of it, but it's still referencing CodeChickenChunks. Thank you so much for the quick response! it's good to see a modpack creator that cares! As before: latest logs https://paste.ee/p/ruK6g# And: Crash report:https://paste.ee/p/Qe12A

Second update: after lowering my chunks to 2 and bum rushing the overworld teleporter, I've had no issues. Everything seems to be working! still, would have liked to have seen the city a bit more, last time I played it wasn't in the game!
Posted by HyperRealisticKettleSimulator 7 years ago
Eww, 2 chunks? I have a nice little collection of ChickChunks bugs so I'm going to try to do my good citizenship and hassle the developer. I don't know who they are yet, so this will be a bit. The modding scene is all over the place, so I make no guarantees it will get fixed. However, I believe there are a few alternate chunk loaders I can try. I think I have a chunk loader still in the space city because of all the teleporters. However, I think RFTools improved to a point where it doesn't need them loaded into a chunk. So I have some backup scheming to try.

BFSR updated to 1.7.10.4, and it appears nobody has complained. Is it looking good?

my biggest issue is that i couldnt find sugar cane for the life of me using the ATG world generation. I could not find an npc selling it at the store on the moon base, so i had to spawn a few in. no other problems so far
Posted by KuzenKrafts 7 years ago
I'll look into it. I particularly wanted to have sugar cane available in a shop because RTG of all things makes it even worse. That generator implicitly is using very large biomes, and sugar cane won't show up in a lot of them.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
Yeap. No sugar cane in the shops. I'll put that on the todo.

Oooh so close. That's a URL for your local computer. I wouldn't be able to look at it there. You want to dump the text in that file to http://pastebin.com/ and give me that link. That puts it on a central server that we both can access.

ok here it is http://pastebin.com/30ZQJ7E2 i did it
Posted by lamsas 7 years ago
also i thought i did
Posted by lamsas 7 years ago
Okay saw it. It looks like ChickenChunks messed itself up. It's particularly used for chunkloaders. Do you know if you have some chunk loaders active? I'm not in a place where I can verify the details, but I believe it keeps a file in the save that denotes active chunk loaders. You can delete that--which will eliminate those chunk loaders--and it should load again. You'll have to put down your chunk loaders again. Everything else in your save should be fine. Of course, you'd back it up first. ;) I can try to find out where this file is tonight.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
Okay I'm home and I can look up some stuff. The standard medicine for this is to delete the chickenchunks folder from the save. I don't know if this outright deletes the chunkloaders that might be active, but it should disable them. That should give it a chance to recover. So make a copy of your save's folder, then reach in there. In the first level of that save's directory is a folder labelled "chickenchunks." Delete it and start your game.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
thanks ill try that now
Posted by lamsas 7 years ago
thanks but actually i deleted chicken core and it worked thanks your the best
Posted by lamsas 7 years ago
ChickenChunks is starting to make me real sad. It's by far the most common issuemaker.
Posted by Rocko Bonaparte 7 years ago | Modpack Creator
This week, I may release a new server pack that has the same stuff. However, it should have all the ForgeEssentials backups from my messing around removed. That's a good thing because it ballooned the size of the server pack download. I will also try to publish some instructions on how to mess with the server instance. Say, you should be able to change the overworld generation settings if you don't like how it's done.

Latest Update

Baby's First Space Race was updated to version 1.7.10.5
